Mitzi, Britain’s fattest pussycat, at almost double its recommended weight, was returned four times to an animal shelter after the adoption attempts ended in failure.

The nine-year-old tabby, weighed 7.7kg (17lbs) when she arrived at Woodside Animal Sanctuary, in Plymouth, England in 2017 when her owner died.

While at the shelter Mitzi was placed on a strict diet and now weighs 5.3kg (12.3lbs). But trying to find Mitzi, a foster home has proven extremely difficult. The tabby went through four failed adoption attempts.

“It’s very unusual for a cat to be returned this many times but sadly she’s just been so unlucky,” said Helen Lecointe, manager of Woodside Animal Welfare Trust. “There was an owner death, a change of circumstance and one owner became very ill.”

Mitzi now has a new home with the family of her original owner, who previously were unable to look after her in rented accommodations. Mitzi and her family will move into their new home this coming April, meanwhile, she will remain with Helen and her friends at the animal sanctuary.

“She’s such a sweet cat. We really hope she’s found her fairytale ending.”
